Create a subdomain in cPanel
Give a blog or test website its own address and separate website directory.
In this guide
Plan the address and directory
A subdomain is a name below your main domain, such as blog.example.com. You need control of the parent domain and room for an additional site in your plan. Replace the example domain with your own.
Create the subdomain in Domains
- Open Domains > Create a New Domain in cPanel. In newer versions, choose Registered Domain if asked for a type.
- Enter the complete subdomain, such as blog.example.com, in Domain.
- Clear Share document root if you want a separate website. Sharing the root displays the existing site's content.
- Check the new site's Document Root. Choose a separate permitted directory and note its location.
- Save with Submit.
- If DNS is hosted externally, add the subdomain's record there too. Then check its HTTPS certificate.
Verify the correct content
Open the document root shown in the Domains list using File Manager. Upload a simple test page or install WordPress only after confirming the directory. Open the subdomain in your browser.
If your main website appears, check the shared document root setting and DNS destination. If the address cannot be found, check nameservers and allow old DNS caches to expire. A certificate warning can mean the new name has not yet received its certificate. Creating a subdomain does not register a new parent domain.
